Burglars won’t find your home an easy target if it’s well lit and features security measures that stop them in their tracks. Protect yourself and your belongings by employing these safety precautions.
Lock Your Doors
You may think you live in a safe area, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t intruders waiting to prey as soon as you leave for work in the morning. Most burglaries take place when no one is home (between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.), this should give you plenty of incentive to keep your doors locked during the day and any time whether you’re home or not.
Lock Your Windows
Doors and windows are the most common entry points for burglars. Unfortunately, manufacturer latches on windows aren’t always safe and secure – sometimes they’re downright flimsy. Tighten up security with locks or key-operated levers. But you don’t have to stop there – install window or glass break sensors and plant prickly bushes under first-floor windows (but be sure to keep them trimmed).
Security System
Installing a home security system is one of the most effective ways to prevent intruders from entering your home. Data proves that a home without a security system is roughly three times more likely to be broken into. If an intruder notices a security camera or a sign indicating you have a security system, they’ll likely move on. Another benefit of a security system – it can also alert you if someone has broken into your home. Depending on your security company, they may also alert law enforcement on your behalf. If you are in the market to sell your home, consider a security system for peace of mind. Real estate for sale in Whistler has security systems to protect property. Buyers are intrinsically looking for how safe a new home feels just as much as how safe a new neighborhood feels.
Install Light Timers
Outdoor motion lights are a great way to protect your home when you are not home. Typically, burglars prefer to operate in the dark to avoid drawing too much attention. With outside motion lights, you can literally put the spotlight on thieves before they get too close to your home.
In addition to drawing attention to any activity happening outside of your home, motion lights imply that there may be a security system installed inside the home.
Shut and Lock Garage Door
A garage door is also a common point of entry for a burglar. Although it may be an inconvenience, keep the door shut while mowing the lawn, playing outside, or even running in to grab a forgotten item. An open door is an open invitation so if you don’t want to extend it, keep the garage door closed.
