CONGRATULATIONS! You’re starting a new venture and you want to make it a HUGE SUCCESS! Now what…
Find your own, dedicated audience…
When starting a new venture, whether that be becoming an influencer, starting a blog, podcast, youtube or even your own business, it’s important to figure out early on WHO your target audience are and how to reach them.
Your audience are your CUSTOMERS. Even if you arnt selling a ‘product’ as such, your still promoting something, YOURSELF… your blog, your posts, your podcast, your youtube. Whatever it is you want to make a success, you need to figure out who your target audience is and then promote to THEM.
When doing this it is all too easy to think ”well I already have 1000 followers on my Instagram so that’s a good start” … well as lovely as that is, the followers on your personal instagram account and more often than not, NOT your target audience.
WHY is this important?
Surely it’s good to have followers??
THE THING IS that YES it’s great to have followers, BUT as the only saying goes QUALITY OVER QUANTITY is very true in this instance. You need to have followers who are interested in the content you are sharing and therefore will share and engage with you. Creating a new instagram account for your venture is the absolute best way to do this.
(A dedicated facebook page is a good shout too but it’s a good shout to start with instagram, grow there and then focus on other social platforms)
What you want, is to start a new instagram account and you want to gain a audience who are there following you for that specific content! Who are there investing in YOU, YOUR brand or YOUR business.
That’s what you need to aim for!
Those are the people who are eventually going to make you money, those people will engage with your content, for example say you were to start a health and fitness blog. If you promoted that via an instagram post on your personal instagram then yeah, they might give it a like… but how many of them are ACTUALLY going to think ‘‘I’m going to go onto this website, this is what I am looking for, this is what I am interested in!”. And how many of them are likely to then click through the links you share and buy things, because that’s a few great ways to start to monetize your blog, page views, shares and affiliate income. SOME of your followers. But not enough… THAT’S NOT WHY YOUR CURRENT AUDIENCE FOLLOW YOU.
STOP trying to appeal to everyone…
NOTHING APPEALS TO EVERYONE!
Now imagine you have a dedicated account for your blog, with content that is specifically aimed at your target audience! Your followers will come to your page because they like what you have to offer, they get value from your content and they are attracted to what you are SELLING! They arnt just following you because your related, or used to work together or went to school together.
Your target audience want to know what you have to offer, they trust you and they want what your selling! Whether that’s restaurant and travel recommendations, outfits you wear, beauty looks you create, products you sell or anything else… your target audience are the ones who will engage, share, like, comment, save your content! They will BUY what you are SELLING!
SIDE NOTE:
Having a tonne of followers on your personal instagram is beneficial in some ways though, for example promoting you have a new instagram account dedicated to your new venture, ‘Check out my brand new Travel & Lifestyle blog, Life with Rachael over @. There you’ll get this, this and this and gain THIS from following. Looking forward to seeing you there!’. This means that anyone of your thousands of followers who fall into your ideal audience will engage your new content and get value from it.
Instagram is a numbers game… but not in the way you might think!
You may still be under the impression that the more followers you have, the better. WRONG! While followers are a important factor in your success, your engagement rate is a much better indicator to brands and potential collaboration partners of how much influence you have. Having 0-10,000 followers but a GREAT engagement rate is much more appealing than having 100k followers but a awful engagement rate.
What’s the point in promoting something to 100,000 people if only 2% of them will buy it and engage? Wouldn’t you rather have 2,000 loyal followers, 30% of which will buy your products and share your content.
I check my engagement rate with Ninjalytics – its a free app and I highly recommend it.
Thanks for checking this out today, I have also recorded a podcast on the subject, this is available on Anchor & Spotify so be sure to check that out.
I would LOVE to see your new Instagram accounts – be sure to send me them in the comments!

I am over on Instagram @alongcamerosie. I have been focussing on engagement so much more recently, the reason I love Instagram is interacting with everyone so it makes sense to have people who WANT to see your content rather than just a follow4follow.

Hey girl, I completely agree! Having a Instagram just for my target audience has made me so many awesome friends! I just gave you a follow!
This article echoes my sentiments out loud, I personally have two twitter accounts, while one is for the folks from all walks of life, the other is strictly for my writing career, I think I’ll try that for IG as well. Thanks.
Excellent advice. I’m still learning about Instagram, so this is very helpful, thanks. I have two Instagram accounts. One is focused on personal finance and catching up retirement savings after a late start, which I also blog about. My other Instagram account focuses on organic lifestyle tips and info.

This is so true! Quality over quantity is so important, as you said having a high number of followers doesn’t mean they’re engaged with your content. It’s great to create a following of people you can speak and relate too, makes it more enjoyable to be on Instagram 🙂 We are already following you, our Instagram is @thegrumpyolive. Thanks for sharing this x
I love instagram but I recently created a new lifestyle ‘brand’ with new social media accounts and Instagram blocked me (for no reason)!! It’s been three days…I can post images but can’t like or comment. Talk about frustrating right when I’m trying to launch! Oh well, they do say patience is a virtue lol!
Have a fab weekend, Rachael

WHATTT that’s crazy… have you appealed? I think there is the option to appeal their ban. I recently hosted a giveaway and gained quite a few followers in 1 day, way more than normal basically, and they marked me as suspicious and now my reach has gone from 1200-1500 per post to max 250. Instagram are trying to stop people buying followers and using bots but its hurting us when we are organically liking and following haha. HOPEFULLY this is just teething problems and won’t happen long term. Fingers crossed for you x
I just started a separate Instagram for my blog due to the reasons you stated. I plan to build my feed a bit before sharing it with my main account, but I’ve been happy to freely post my content without feeling like I’m spamming friends and family!
Im glad I came across this on Twitter, this was a nice, “of course” moment because I’m a com student. I started going to school again after a two year break, but still lol. I just dusted off my old blog after ignoring it for five years, do you have any SEO key word app/program suggestions?
Hey Taylor, for SEO I use the rankmath plugin and for seo keyword research I would really recommend ubersuggest and also key search – both of which you can use for a few searches a day!
Driving blog traffic from IG works well with the existing long term followers. However, it is challenging with new leads and finding new IG followers is tricky since the platform is saturated with content creators.
I’ve recently set up an Instagram account for my blog, and hope to put it to good use this year! Great tips, thanks for sharing x
This is super helpful! You’ve really got to put the effort to connect with people on Instagram. I love my audience even though I have a small amount of followers for now! Thanks for sharing your tips x

Thanks so much, I’m so glad I could be of value!!
I didn’t think a platform like Instagram would work for a blog until I gave it a try and it’s actually helping to grow my reach and audience.
This was a great post. Thank you for sharing!
